Acupuncture and long covid
15th June, 2022
We have all been severely affected by Covid-19.
As an TCM practitioner, I have paid close attention to how Chinese TCM practitioners treat Covid in China since the pandemic started. In March 2022, the China Association of Acupuncture and Moxibustion drew up guidelines (the ninth edition) as to how to treat Covid at all stages: early – suspected Covid; mid – with clinical symptoms; and post-Covid rehabilitation, in which acupuncture is listed as one of the effective solutions.
According to The Guardian on 1st June 2022, Two million people in UK living with long Covid, find studies
ONS figures show that one in five people with long Covid had the infection two years ago
Some people continue to experience Covid symptoms, such as breathlessness, muscle aches and fatigue, for months or even years, a condition that has been labelled long Covid.
"Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that as of 1 May this year, 2 million people living in private households in the UK – or 3.1% of the population – reported they were still experiencing Covid symptoms more than four weeks after their first suspected coronavirus infection."
According to British Acupuncture Council:
"One in seven of those with Covid symptoms would be ill for at least a month, one in twenty for two months, and one in forty five for three or more months: https://covid.joinzoe./post/long-covid. Symptoms vary in type, intensity and duration, leading some experts to suggest that there may be several different syndromes at play. Some people may not get the recognition and treatment they need, which will affect their mental as well as physical health. This applies particularly for non-hospitalised patients, who did not have severe respiratory problems and are assumed to have only a mild version of the disease that will clear up in a couple of weeks. One group of people get respiratory symptoms like cough and shortness of breath, but another has symptoms across many body systems. Fatigue is seen commonly, as are ‘brain fog’ and heart symptoms. Acupuncture that is based on the traditional East Asian models is well placed to help people with long Covid. Patients with multiple, chronic symptoms are treated using a holistic approach, helping to support their own self-healing capabilities to provide better sustained, overall improvement, rather than focusing on one symptom at a time. This approach will include the effects on the immune system and inflammatory processes, which in turn may play a part in treating long Covid, just as they can in preventing infection."
The good news is my patients who suffered, or are suffering with Covid, are getting significant improvement after each treatment. They reported better sleeping, less shortness of breath, and less fatigue.
I hope everyone who caught Covid will recover quickly from it, and I wish their lives will go back to normal as soon as possible.
I am proud to be able to offer a little help in these difficult times.
